Is this right ? the confusion of values
On Sunday 11th March ,2018 Nawaz Sharif faced the worse humiliation of his life. But well this might not be the first time he thought that...for their have been many past instances that must have brought him to the same emotional conclusion.
But this was way out of line, a shoe thrown at your face....in the middle of your speech! this is bad!
The guy was out there again trying to muster some support for himself right before the elections, as if he could pull the whole circus again and get another opportunity to nibble away at the country.
But this is not the topic of my blog....nope. I will not do what 193 million people are doing right now. I will not point fingers, I will not make jokes about it, I will not gossip about it - I shall only try to shine the light towards the truth.
So The question we need to be asking about this incident is - IS THIS RIGHT ?
The public hurling shoes at their leaders because they are unhappy with them. Is that right ?
Now if you are not a Pakistani, or a Pakistani who has not actually lived within the turmoil of the country - you would say OFFCOURSE NOT!
but hold that thought - hold it before you get judgmental about the most weirdly, unique, talented, depressed yet the most content Nation in the world. We Pakistanis are a work of art, and we have our own way of coping with stress (other than gorging on copious amounts of fatty foods and chai)
Coping with stress does not mean we like to hurl shoes at people but it means that we choose to do SOMETHING than to do nothing at all, which means that if we cannot stop an undeserving man from taking the position of our leader, we can at least throw a shoe at him....and believe me,....that is a good sign!
Being a Pakistani (who is on a journey to leave this identity behind) I often contemplate, how can we be so lost with the rights in our lives. In no world is it "right" to do that to anyone! let alone a person who is in some sort of position of authority.
Before you turn your thoughts against me, trying to say "what do you know?" and "you have never been the first hand recipient of the injustice of people like Nawaz Sharif" attitude, let me tell you - been there done that.
I understand how hard it is to be a Pakistani, witness these cartoons parade the dignity and integrity of our nation all around the world and make a mockery of it, but stilll....... yes still..... it does not give us the right to loose our ground because we need to remember what Pakistan means.
70 years ago, Pakistan was not just a nation born out of the divide of two civilizations, as is the norm. But a thought, an ideology, a dream , a utopia. You know what that means? It means that a few people back then actually had a dream of an idealistic country to be born - where all the population would be that of muslims and they would live by the divine guiding principals taught by Islam and make it the most peaceful land on earth just like Madina was right after Islam was born. Pakistan is only second to Madina on being a nation born purely on the basis of Islam.
We were a nation who aspired to be followers of Prophet Muhammad who would face calamities way worse than the oppression of corrupt leaders with poise and dignity. He was the one who went to ask how the lady was doing who used to throw garbage at him everyday. He was the one who carried the load of the old woman who cursed him all along the way. He was the one who forgave the killer of his beloved family after he embraced Islam, he was the one who refused to take revenge from the people who threw stones at him and made fun him !
These are not just stories in the books we read , but a reality of a character that is very much possible!
Today as we comment on the political outlook of our country and take delight in the latest gossip of the political arena, we need to take a step back and look at ourselves with a third persons view.
What have we become ?
Will the Prophet ever make fun of the leaders he had around him no matter how unworthy, ruthless or corrupt they were?
Will the Prophet ever indulge into a war of finger pointing and calling each other names in order to save face in public and maintain his political profile?
Will the Prophet ever loose hope in justice and say "nothing can become of this nation!"
Will the Prophet ever loose his cool and throw a shoe at his leader???
We cannot even imagine it. Then how can his followers become like that ? It is a point of complete and utter shame.
We need to stop this game of power & arrogance and humble down. It seems that we as a nation have lost patience, hope, wisdom, clarity and above all....our values.
We are nothing but a nation of confused values.....
because we have lost our connection to our roots....the true reason why Pakistan ever came to life....
A hope that it would be a country of peace, of tolerance and above all of the teachings of our beloved Prophet PBUH....
So before you crack that next joke about your politicians or get overly critical of their performance. Ask yourself.... is this right ?
and if you are a true Muslim, a true follower of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) you will know...
.... it is definitely NOT.
